Jack Ma of Alibaba is a Beach Fan

by Bill Davis

I was reading an article, "You Don't Know Jack", on Jack Ma of Alibaba fame from Fortune Magazine's 2017 The World's 50 Greatest Leaders issue when I came across this quote:

"I don't want to die in my office.  I want to die on the beach."

While the context of this statement is hard to place, its been mentioned it was a way to avoid answering a challenging question, it's still resonated with his followers as its become a widely used quote to help explain who Jack is.  One of the greatest capitalists in the world today clearly called out the beach as his happy place and whether he was doing this just to change the mood at an opportune time or really meant it, and probably a little bit of both, it has absolutely made a connection for the people who follow him.

It gives people something upbeat to reflect on and as anyone who loves the beach can attest, that's what the beach does.  So really good way for me, and I hope others, to start their weekend with this quote.  Although the only beaches I will visit this weekend are on Puget Sound, I am eagerly looking forward to my trip to the coast of Maine in less than a month and then to the Oregon coast over Labor Day weekend.

May the beach be with you.
